SMAW stands for Shielded Metal Arc Welding — the “stick welding” you see in construction sites and fabrication shops. SMAW NC II is the TESDA qualification that certifies you can weld carbon steel plates and pipes to industry standard, and it is the most searched TESDA welding course.

What is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC II?
In SMAW, an electric arc forms between a consumable electrode (the welding rod) and the metal. The flux coating on the rod melts and creates a gas and slag that shield the weld from the air — that is the “shielded” part. It is simple, portable and works outdoors, which is why it is used everywhere from steel structures to pipelines.
TESDA splits SMAW into levels. SMAW NC I covers basic welding of plates; SMAW NC II moves on to plates and pipes in more difficult positions. To enroll in NC II you normally need to have completed SMAW NC I training or hold the NC I certificate.
What you will learn
The core unit of competency in SMAW NC II is:
- Weld carbon steel plates and pipes using SMAW
On top of these, every TESDA qualification includes basic competencies (workplace communication, teamwork, professionalism, occupational health and safety) and common competencies for the sector.

Jobs you can apply for
- SMAW welder (construction, shipbuilding, fabrication shops)
- Structural steel welder
- Pipe welder (with experience and further certification)
- Self-employed welder for gates, grills and repairs
Welders are among the skilled workers recruited from the Philippines for construction, shipyards and oil and gas projects abroad. Employers usually run their own welding tests and may require international certifications on top of the TESDA NC.
Is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC II right for you?
- You are good with your hands and comfortable with heat, sparks and protective gear
- You want a trade that pays well with experience
- You have finished SMAW NC I (or are ready to start there)
- You are interested in construction or shipbuilding jobs, in the Philippines or abroad
Frequently asked questions
What does SMAW mean?
SMAW means Shielded Metal Arc Welding — a welding process that uses a flux-coated consumable electrode (stick) and an electric arc. It is also called stick welding or manual metal arc welding.
What is the difference between SMAW NC I and NC II?
NC I covers basic welding of plates; NC II covers welding of carbon steel plates and pipes in more advanced positions. NC I (training or certificate) is normally an entry requirement for NC II.
What are the entry requirements for SMAW NC II?
Training providers typically ask that you completed SMAW NC I training or hold an SMAW NC I certificate, can communicate orally and in writing, have basic math skills, and are physically and mentally fit.
Is there a free online TESDA welding course?
The TESDA Online Program does not currently list an SMAW course; welding is learned hands-on in a workshop. Look for TESDA scholarships at training centers near you.
Can I work abroad as a welder with SMAW NC II?
It is a good starting credential, but overseas employers usually test applicants and may require international welding certifications and experience.
